Stone Circles \/ Henges<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

\"Druid<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The construction of stone circles began sometime during the late Neolithic and continued through into the Bronze Age. It was after 2500 BC that circles of standing stones became increasingly popular in Britain,<\/span> with many stone circles erected within an existing \u2018henge\u2019. It has proven difficult to date these monuments accurately as there are no other archaeological artefacts associated with the stone circles.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018Druids Circle\u2019 above Penmaenmawr is one of many stone circles that are scattered across the landscape of Tan y Fan, it is the most well known and the best example of stone circles we have in this part of North Wales. Although it is called<\/span> \u2018Druids Circle\u2019, <\/strong>it has no relevant connection to the ancient Druids as\u00a0the stone<\/span> circle\u00a0predates<\/span> them by a few thousand years.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

– Described in 1772 consisting of 38 upright stones of various forms.<\/em> There are no stones to be seen in the field.<\/em> Local tradition states that a circle was blown up in this field in recent times.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
